In Between Silence and Movement, Zhou Jinhua presents landscapes and human narratives suspended between stillness and change. Across mist-filled forests, solitary journeys, changing seasons, and quiet encounters, the familiar world becomes dreamlike and psychologically charged.

Zhou Jinhua’s recent paintings invite viewers into spaces where time appears to slow down. Figures move through expansive landscapes, gather beneath trees, or pause at the edge of an unfolding story. These scenes are neither entirely observed nor imagined; they exist between memory, theatre, and lived experience.

The exhibition brings together works from 2025 and 2026, tracing a movement from winter stillness to seasonal renewal. Soft atmospheres and restrained colour create a sense of distance, while small human and animal figures introduce intimacy, tension, and narrative possibility.

Rather than presenting nature as a passive backdrop, Zhou treats the landscape as an emotional and psychological space. Each work asks the viewer to remain with uncertainty: to notice what is quiet, what is changing, and what may be about to happen.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Zhou Jinhua

Zhou Jinhua (b. 1978, Deyang, Sichuan) is a Chinese contemporary artist known for his distinctive bird’s-eye perspectives. Trained in oil painting at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, he constructs expansive scenes populated by anonymous, miniature figures whose actions hover between the ordinary and the surreal. By disrupting scale, perspective and the familiar logic of public space, Zhou examines the unstable relationship between the individual and the collective, as well as the distance between lived reality and its representation. Alongside painting on canvas, he has worked with unconventional supports including roof tiles, bricks, broken glass and reclaimed building materials. His works have been exhibited across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, Germany and Australia, and are represented in the White Rabbit Collection in Sydney.
